ABSTRACT: My ROTC Battalion was on maneuvers in some woods near Radford, VA. My squad (7 soldiers) was to form the far right flank for an ambush drill. When we had taken our position near the top of a hill, we heard a very distant, yet still loud, cracking noise. We looked up, and saw a large (although we cant accurately estimate its size) boomerang shaped object moving quickly through the sky. Although it looked like pure light, being yellow/orange, it did not light up any clouds nearby that we could see. Later that night, we found our compasses were not working, and after the drill were trying to find our way back to the TOC, when we saw a ball of light (again, I do not know its size) descending through the trees. We thought it may have been a flare, possibly a signal sent by the others for us because we were lost. When we went towards the light, we heard movement (branches snapping) and some very peculiar noises. I do not know how to describe these noises, the best I could describe them as is very juicy fruit being squashed loudly, plus rapid clicking noises. Thinking it may have been OPFOR, we sprawled on the ground and waited for them to walk into our field of fire, but they never did. Then, far more oddly, the ball of light reappeared on the ground, and then began ascending through the trees! It was at this point that we realized it was not a flare. We decided to find a low valley and camped there until dawn. When we were found by a friendly patrol the next morning, and told of our current location, we were at the far northern corner of the base, nearly 6 miles from any enemy/friendly forces, so I do not know what we heard moving around that night. I do wish to remain anonymous, and can provide a sketch of the boomerang object if needed.
