Abstract: A 60 year-old Yakima man and his wife observed a strange object in the night sky about 10:15 PM Monday. The couple watched the star-like object for roughly 45 minutes. The UFO was seen around Mt. Adams, which is near the Yakima Indian Reservation. The weather was partly cloudy. The eyewitness reported, "The object was stationary. It was just west of Mt. Adams, Washington. It had a bright white light with a flashing red light on either side. The green and red lights were switching places. Then as if turning off a light switch, it would disappear, only to reappear in another location moments later." Someone in our newsgroup asked "Where did the green light come from?"
The Yakama Nation (aka Yakima Indian Reservation) is considered a "Hot-Spot," because the area is known for a high level of UFO activity. LOCAL LEGENDS AND POSSIBLE EXPLANATIONS MT ADAMS WASHINGTON
People living in and around the Mt. Adams area have reported strange lights going in and out of the mountain for years. In the late 1990s, three trained investigators watched an object fly across the face of Mt. Adams. The object seemed to disappear and then reappear moments later. Two of the sleuths were from UFORC. At first they thought that it was an airplane. But after careful consideration the behavior of the object gave it the classification of an UFO. At night they are classified as nocturnal lights. These lights seem to disappear as if a “light switch had been turned off." They may reappear moments later. Such was the case with the report, which we received on Monday April 7, 2008.
One possible explanation is that these are earthlights. Tremendous pressures generated by tectonic activity make these balls of plasma. Yakama Indian folklore suggests that they are spirit lights, the souls of the dead. Someone in our newsgroup suggested that it could have been a man made object, like a balloon or a kite rigged with lights. Mt Adams is near the Yakima firing range. The Washington State National Guard has been known to conduct night training exercises in the Mt Adams area. But these are not the only explanations.
Some locals believe that the occupants of the UFOs are accessing these volcanic vents and fumaroles for a variety of uses. It has been suggested that they are using them to mine various minerals. Another popular theory is that the UFO occupants are using them to avoid detection.
A vent is a volcanic conduit of cylindrical or pipe-like form. Vents may extend many miles from the base of that mountain. Theory has it that these vents were created many centuries ago when the mountain was formed by the release of hot gases below the surface. When the mountain cooled, the shafts remained. The escape of hot gasses can also make "fumaroles." According to the US Geological Survey, "Fumaroles may occur along tiny cracks or long fissures, in chaotic clusters or fields, and on the surfaces of lava flows and thick deposits of pyroclastic flows. They may persist for decades or centuries if they are above a persistent heat source or disappear within weeks to months if they occur atop a fresh volcanic deposit that quickly cools." Rumor has it that these vents and fumaroles are part of an extensive network of subterranean caves and tunnels extending from the State of Washington to southern California. Some postulate that these underground caverns are being used as a secret UFO base.
