SMELL ASSOCIATED WITH PARANORMAL ENCOUNTERS: Anson, THE AMITYVILLE HORROR

Nausea, retching, vomiting, illness or general malaise seems to be directly related to their encounters with entities both before during and after the associated phenomena, for both Father Mancuso and George Lutz.  Anson, NB pp 159

The smell of "human excrement" permeated the priest’s apartment, following a votive Mass celebrated for the Lutz family and their home at 112 Ocean Avenue.  This event followed a verbal threat made to Father Mancuso during his first (and last) visit to the Lutz home.  The priest had said that he had heard a voice that had told him to "get out."  Whether this entity meant get out of the house or something else, is not perfectly clear.  After researching this case in its entirety, I would have to choose the former interpretation.

Around that same time, George Lutz had reported something similar. He was drawn to this encounter by an event, which was ascribed to a power failure, caused by a blown fuse that resulted in a pump malfunction in the boathouse.  This demanded his immediate attention to prevent damage to his personal property (Lutz used the pump to aerate the water around his boats preventing the damaging effects of ice that had already occurred on the Amityville River).

After replacing the fuse in the electrical panel in the basement, he noted the reactivation of the pump (in the boathouse) and began his ascent up the basement stairs.  It was around that time when he noted a strange odor permeating the air.  He went back downstairs to investigate.  At first George thought that the stench was the smell of oil. After much searching, George  "sniffed and then sensed the foul odor was coming from the area near the northeast corner -- by the plywood storage closets that shielded the secret room." - page 159-160

Here are the meat and potatoes of research, some extrapolation as well as other personal input was excluded due to time constraints.

SMELL ASSOCIATED WITH UFO ENCOUNTERS:  Keel, OPERATION TROJAN HORSE

Smell is referenced by Keel to denote sensations associated with the entities; and I quote here from page 270:  "Some contactee illnesses are suggestive of radiation poisoning, while others seem to be induced by the odors which frequently surround the entities."  Keel Reference footnote 2-a

John Keel, IBID; See SCAN 241; "Contactee complain that they suffer from nausea, headaches and general illnesses after their initial meetings with the entities.  But after a series of such meetings their bodies seem to adjust, and they are no longer adversely affected."  (See smells associated with UFOs, Keel IBID)

ODIFEROUS SENSATIONS AREN’T THE ONLY SYMPTOM OF CLOSE ENCOUNTERS; the data will show that there are other parallels, which can be drawn from Ufology and Parapsychology.

HERE IS A QUOTE FROM ANSON concerning Lutz' reaction to the smell: "The stench of human excrement was heavy in the confined space.  It formed a choking fog.  Nauseated, George's stomach began to heave.  He had just time enough to pull the panel back into place and shut out the mist before he vomited, fouling his clothes and the floor." See Anson IBID

The next day, the odor was gone, suggesting that he had adjusted to the smell emanating from the red room.  Lutz had attributed this to some secret airshaft, which was never found. (Anson IBID page 159 and pp 181 bodily adjustments (Keel, OpCit)

"All of the literature I have touched upon thus far merely serves as a beginning.  We cannot close our minds to some aspects of the fantastic while we happily embrace other equally fantastic parts.  The ufologists sneer at the occultists and vice versa.  The theologian and the religionist frown upon both.  Orthodox science laughs at the entire scene.  Open communication with the phenomenon is not something far in our future.  It is here.  It is happening now."  Keel, IBID p272

I FOUND KEEL'S OBSERVATIONS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST, including his observation regarding the mysterious nature of the entities.  In OPERATION TROJAN HORSE, he says, "Our skies are filled with Trojan horses and always have been.  They are operating on a mysterious timetable, deliberately sowing nonsense and confusion in their wake."  My question is why don't these so called entities want us to know who they really are...but choose rather to conceal or mislead our understanding of them?  (Keel, IBID, page 305).  See also footnotes, reference 2b.

Anson has narrowed the playing field for researchers of science and psuedo-science into three categories.  They are as follows:

            1. The "scientific views of the world;" and the universe, strictly adhering to the empirical scientific methodology to include all of the scientific laws that govern their work, e.g.- Coulomb barrier; utilizing as much as possible the hypothesis, the experiment and the conclusion or results of that survey to prove/disprove any given thing.

            2. The superstitious ignore the scientific view of the world which they find "shallow and meaningless."  The focus is on unseen entities.

            3. The 'third stance" is something that he says are a combination of the two, adhering to the scientific process as much as possible but embracing the spiritual dimensions as well.  This, he says, "broaden the vistas of positive science, incorporating spiritual dimensions of reality through theological and philosophical considerations."  This third stance is what, he says, we may call the "religious stance."

In my opinion, those who view the world superstitiously are diametrically opposed to the other, more scientific approach to problem solving.  I think that science and parapsychology should be fused, incorporating the best from both worlds.  We can call this new field Parascience.
